I just wonder if there is a typo and the word “know” should be there at the place of “knew”.
If you say you “knew” where your life end, then may be you are only having a thought about the
hypothetical future.
If you say you “know* then it is quite another thing and may be even true.
But are you sure what do you mean by the word “I””? If you see carefully, when we say “I”, we are ourself the one who refers to this “I” as someone else, on the other hand and this one / “I” itself refers to “I”. Here lies the contradiction we hardly notice. Knowing the “I” is never an intellectual gymnastics, but a quite natural, spontaneous and simple understanding to be discovered. This “I” that we talk about is never the one who we are but can never talk about. This “I” that we talk about is but a fleeting thought that constanyly appears and disappears. Most often it is not even there when we are busy with some activity of our mind. It is how by understanding this we can get out of the clutches of all thought and it is there always. But we only need to turn our attention to this Reality of the “I” that we talk about and the “I” that we are ever so, timelessly without effort. The effort is the superficial “I”, while the effortless is the “I” that we are!
